Specchio Lens Mount Cycling Mirror: Frequently Asked Questions

About the Mirror

Question:  Why do I even need a bike mirror?

Answer:  The short answer:  a mirror is one tool to peacefully coexist with motor vehicle traffic, and to improve awareness when riding with other cyclists.  The longer answer includes recommendations from a former pro cyclist, an urban cycling expert and a veteran of bike touring.  Read their various reasons for using bike mirrors.

Question:  Will the Specchio mirror work with my cycling glasses?

Answer:  Almost certainly yes.  Here’s why:  The vast majority of cycling glasses have the same lens curvature, known as base curve 8.  This curved shape is what allows the Specchio attachment to be mounted to the lens using the supplied double sided adhesive.  We’ve seen the mirror work beautifully with Tifosi, Oakley, Dual, and other popular cycling glasses brands.  Here it is with the Oakley EVZero Path:

Question:  I’m nervous about sticking something onto my glasses lens.  Can I remove it if I need to?

Answer:  Yes. If you ever wish to remove the magnetic attachment, use a credit card or other non-scratching device to pry the assembly from the lens.  Any residue can be easily cleaned with a lens cleaning cloth.  Conversely, a more permanent attachment can be achieved using superglue.  (Use extreme care when using glue around your lens.)

Question:  I’m trying to decide between the two sizes:  Standard or compact.  Which should I choose?

Answer:  You really can't go wrong with either choice.  They are both inconspicuous while still offering a surprisingly good rear view. The standard 19 mm size (about the size of a dime) is a good choice for riders using a mirror for the first time.  Experienced mirror users may prefer the compact 15 mm size (smaller than a dime).  Below, the two sizes side by side:

Question:  Will I look like a nerd wearing this bike mirror?

Answer:  Without seeing you, we can’t make any guarantees.  But, one of the principal considerations in designing the Specchio cycling mirror was lessening the “nerd factor.”  The dime-sized standard version and the even smaller compact model, mounted on a stalk less than 1.5 inches long, virtually disappear when combined with sunglasses and helmet.  People may not even notice you're wearing it...but please help us out by spreading the word!  (Would you notice the Specchio pictured below?)

Question:  How difficult is it to attach the mirror to my glasses?

Answer:  Not difficult.   It’s much easier than, say, threading a needle or putting a decal on your car window. Plus, we have written and video instructions to help you.

Question:  How does the Specchio mirror compare with the Bike Peddler Take a Look mirror?

Answer:  Glad you asked.  Take a Look and Specchio take the same general approach to adding a rear view mirror to a cyclist's gear, but we think you'll find the Specchio mirror superior in two important ways:  It is less conspicuous and easier to adjust.  Check out the in-depth comparison.
